Ecological Surveys and Dormouse Mitigation – Affordable Housing Development, Washford Somerset

Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, Protected Species Surveys & Ecological Clerk of Works

Summary

HalpinRobbins provided ecological consultancy services to support an affordable housing development in Washford, Somerset. Working for a housing provider delivering homes for local people in housing need, the project required ecological assessment, protected species surveys and ecological supervision during construction.

Challenge

Initial surveys identified that the site supported a small population of slow worms and habitat suitable for dormice. As dormice are a European protected species, development required mitigation planning and a licence from Natural England.

What We Did

HalpinRobbins undertook the initial ecological scoping assessment and Phase 2 surveys. A reptile mitigation strategy using habitat manipulation was implemented to move reptiles from the development area. The team also prepared and secured a dormouse mitigation licence and provided Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) services during construction.

Results

The development was successfully completed while ensuring compliance with wildlife legislation and protection of protected species.
