The site supported protected species including bats and water voles, and was located within the Natural England Great Crested Newt District Level Licensing amber zone. Surveys identified bat roosts across several buildings.
HalpinRobbins completed a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, ecological building surveys and detailed bat surveys. Seven bat species were recorded across the site, including soprano pipistrelle, brown long‑eared bat and the rare barbastelle bat. A water vole survey was also undertaken due to nearby waterbodies.
Through collaboration with the project team and regulators, a practical mitigation strategy was developed that protected wildlife while allowing the refurbishment project to proceed.
