The Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) is the leading professional membership body for ecologists in the United Kingdom and in January 2016 they produced a simple guide for householders and small scale developers on how and why to engage an ecologist.
Covering topics such as "Why do I need and ecologist?" and "What is licensing?" this four page document provides a simple brief to those that might believe employing an ecologist is a daunting task or simply don't know what they need to look for.
There are, as with any simple guide, omissions that could case some confusion; but this document is only intendedto be a pointer to the main considerations to employing an ecologist and not to help assess the quality or deliver of the work.
Additional advice can be found within the web pages of HalpinRobbins, such as:
These webpages cover some of the other aspects that will need to be considered, reasons why an ecologist might be required and when and provides advice topics including the many other names that surveys, such as Preliminary Ecological Assessments, can be called by different people, companies and government bodies.
Within the downloads pages there is a checklist document to help mico, small, medium and large scale developers, using ecologists, assess the quality and content of any initial screening ecology survey/report (Preliminary Ecology Assessment, Phase 1 survey) being used for the purpose of a planning application. Please note the download document is a guide and not a definitive list.
