Environmental Management Systems

Increasingly, stakeholders and customers expect organisations to demonstrate their commitment to managing and minimising their environmental impacts. Having an environmental management system is one way for an organisation to demonstrate this.

An Environmental Management System is a set of processes and practices that enable an organisation to control the interaction between any business operation, project or development and its surroundings including emissions to air, land and water, legal compliance, effects on the neighbouring community, landscape and ecology. The management of these interactions enables the business or project to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency.

There are certified Environmental Management System, such as ISO14001 or Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), and non-certified Environmental Management System. The non-certified Environmental Management System can be developed and run without the need for external referencing and continuous re-certification, although the system should incorporate some level of internal monitoring and modification processes and if required for the purpose of an environmental permit* will need to be compliant with the regulators standards.

HalpinRobbins are not a certifying body but works with clients to develop, produce and initiate non-certified Environmental Management Systems. We also help and guide clients towards certified Environmental Management System, such as ISO 14001 and provide support for internal audit reviews and external compliance reviews for these certified systems. For a better idea about our projects and work involving Environmental Management Systems see our case studies or contact us to discuss your project.

* Under the Environmental Permitting Regulations both Bespoke and Standard environmental permits require the holders to have and environmental management system or plan in place for the type of works being undertaken under the permit. This can be a certified system such as ISO14001 or a non-certified system; the latter will be required to meet the regulators accepted standards.
